Lichfield - Cricket ground : Map credit National Library of Scotland Lichfield Cricket Club was formed in 1844 and in the 1870s, the club acquired a ground on the north side of Chesterfield Road, their ground was also used by the newly formed county cricket club. There was little enthusiasm for cricket in Lichfield and after the last week long cricket festival in 1883, the county club left, but the city club survived, playing at Chesterfield Road until the late 1980s.

The first bicycle racing at the ground was at the Lichfield athletic sports on 18th June 1881, the sports had moved from Beacon House in where they were held the previous year. The attendance at the meeting was reasonable, given the dull, showery weather. There were two bicycle races, a two miles open handicap and a 1½ miles local handicap. Music was provided by the band of the 1st Staffordshire Militia. The Lichfield Mercury commented on the track "the only possible objection that could be raised was the somewhat angular formation of the course; but this from the undulating nature of the ground on the north side of the field, was unavoidable.

At the 1882 sports, there were two bicycle races, one open and one for local competitors, a tricycle race and a one mile scratch race for the Championship of Lichfield Cycling Club. The annual sports moved back to Beacon House for 1883, but returned to the cricket ground for the 5th July 1884 meeting. After this, the sports stayed at the cricket ground and were held annually for the next thirteen years.

The athletic sports on 17th August 1889 attracted 180 competitors, there were nine events and the total prize money was £40. The one mile safety bicycle race for locals was held on a track of six laps to the mile, there were five competitors but the limit man won easily by fifty yards. Press reports of the bicycle racing described it more than once as ‘lacklustre' because of the very poor handicapping.

1890 the meeting made a loss of over £80 and relied on patron subscriptions to break even. It was noted that the organisers had managed to eliminate betting at the meeting. The Lichfield City Cycling Club were formed in 1890 and when the Lichfield Athletic Club held their sports on 25th July 1891, Lichfield City CC held a club race at the meeting.

The last bicycle racing at the cricket ground was at the athletic club sports on 13th July 1895. There were two bicycle races, a one mile handicap for members of Lichfield Cycling Club, which was won by middle marker GH Mooney and a one mile local handicap, won by local crack CR Auckland, riding a Lester bicycle. After 1895, bicycle racing in Lichfield moved to the Recreation Ground.

The site of the old cricket ground is now a modern apartment building, appropriately called Kensington Oval.
